1. Trials conducted with the Australian New Zealand
Breast Cancer Trials Group (ANZBCTG)
ALTTO: A Clinical Trial for women with breast cancer comparing
Herceptin (intravenous therapy) as treatment with both Herceptin
and Lapatinib (tablets) together. The trial is researching the
scheduling of the treatments and the order in which the therapies
are given. It is conducted over 12 months and patients are followed
up for 5 years. We are no longer recruiting to this trial.
SOFT: A Clinical Trial for women with breast cancer that
studies the effect of suppressing ovarian function in
pre-menopausal women. There are 3 arms - Tamoxifen only, Tamoxifen
with ovarian suppression and Exemestane with ovarian
suppression. Women who are randomized into an arm with ovarian
suppression can choose how that is achieved. This trial is
conducted over 5 years. We are still recruiting to it to this
trial.
CO-SOFT: A sub-study of the SOFT trial which evaluates and
compares changes in cognitive function. Women in this study
undertake a computer-based cognitive test before they commence
treatment and again after 12 months and 5 years. This trial
is open for recruitment.
POEMS: A Clinical Trial for young pre-menopausal women with
breast cancer which trials a therapy to reduce ovarian failure from
chemotherapy. This trial is open for recruitment.
LATER: A Clinical Trial for post-menopausal women who
have had breast cancer in the past. This trial is for women who
have completed 5 years of therapy and looks at adding Letrozole to
the usual therapy with the aim of preventing a new breast cancer
forming. We have not yet started recruiting to this trial but
should commence in the next few weeks.
PACCT: A new Clinical Trial that should be up and running in a
few weeks. A very different trial that integrates a new molecular
diagnostic test into decisions regarding treatment which will
potentially lead to individualized treatment options. We hope to
start recruiting patients in the next few weeks.
2. Pharmaceutical Company Trials
S380: A Clinical Trial comparing different treatment regimens
for patients with advanced lung cancer. We are no longer recruiting
patients to this trial which is due to finish soon.
3. Australasian Gastro-intestinal Trials Group
(AGITG)
Quasar 2: A Clinical Trial for patients with bowel cancer
which compares current post-surgery therapy (Xeloda tablets) with a
combination of Xeloda and Avastin which is an intravenous
chemotherapy. The purpose of the trial is study if the new
combination is more effective at stopping the cancer coming back.
The trial is conducted over 6 or 12 months. It is open for
recruitment.
